Viewing data logs in Excel format (Siemens LUT 400 Ultrasonic Level Controller)

Siemens’ LUT 400 saves data values and alarm events in text-formatted log files. This note covers how to get the files out of the LUT400 to view them in spreadsheet format using Siemens Log Importer macro for Excel.

The text files are extracted from the LUT400 over a USB cable (mini B type connector).  When the USB cable is connected to your PC, the LUT400 appears as a removable drive (circled in red, below)

Belt Scales 101: Webinar Recap

In case you missed last week’s webinar on belt scales, we’ve put together some of the key points:

Conveyor Considerations: Use strings to align the scale with the idlers on each side of the weigh bridge.Idler.png

  • Each idler should be parallel to the idler next to it.
  • The center of each idler should be in line with the idler next to it.
  • Each idler should not be higher or lower than the idler next to it.
  • Minimum of 2, preferred 3, idlers on each side of the weigh bridge

Free Download: Siemens e-book Going the Distance – Solid Level Measurement with Radar

A couple years ago, Siemens published a great handbook on using radar to measure solids levels, but the $60 price tag limited its readership.

You can now download the book for free as an electronic epub file formatted for electronic readers, which in my case, is the Firefox browser on my laptop.  It could be any browser (Internet Explorer or Chrome), or presumably any electronic book reader.

Air Bubbler Systems: Old Faithful Liquid Level Measurement

In an ideal world there would be a perfect liquid level measurement system that would work for every liquid and every application.  Unfortunately, that product does not yet exist, leaving operators and technicians to go through the trial and error process of finding the level instrumentation that will work for them.

So in this high-tech world, is there still a need for the old faithful pneumatic systems like air bubblers?  The answer is YES!  Why? Because air bubbler systems work when other systems fail.

Why won’t Pactware work with the Siemens LUT 400?

I’ve used Pactware for a couple years now, so I was surprised when I couldn’t get the Siemens LUT400 to work with the software. The LUT400 ultrasonic level and flow controller comes with a DTM file that I installed before opening the Pactware software.

The DTM file can be downloaded from this link: http://tinyurl.com/cqk2cky

Once it had been installed, I opened Pactware and updated the device catalog, as seen in the picture below:

But when I attempted to establish a HART connection to the LUT400, I got an error message:
