What’s the Backdoor Password for Honeywell X-Series Paperless Recorders?

Honeywell Minitrend QX X-Series Paperless RecorderOne of the strengths of Honeywell’s X-series paperless recorders is password security. You can configure it to keep operators from making configuration changes, and it’s a necessary part of being able to view a recorder’s data using a web browser.

One of the weaknesses of Honeywell’s X-series paperless recorders is password security. And by that, I don’t mean it’s bad. I just mean it can cause problems if a user fails to enter their username and password right, and ends up locked out of the recorder.

So I’m guessing if you searched for the backdoor password, you’re in that situation. You’re locked out of your recorder and can’t figure out how to get back in.

First, I apologize for luring you into reading this. There is NO backdoor password for an X-series recorder.  But don’t give up hope: There is an answer.

Hopefully, there’s a user at your location with administrator level access, who can reset a locked-out user. But if that’s not the case, what do you do when everyone is locked out of an X-series recorder?

Honeywell TrendManager Suite software is Windows 7 compliant

TrendManager Suite is Windows software for Honeywell’s Trendview paperless recorders, which includes the licensed TrendManager Pro (TMP) and Trendserver Pro (TSP) software and the freeware Trendviewer.

The latest release, version 6.1.38.0, has revisions to the installer that makes the version Windows 7 compliant.   Earlier versions had issues trying to run under Windows 7.   For download and installation details, read further.

Simple file format for simple data reporting

There’s a mantra I’ve heard often here at Lesman:  If something can be automated to improve your work day, it should be. That point hit home earlier this week with one of our customers.

This particular plant reports daily water discharge to the local municipal government. The plant’s flowmeter has been installed for several years, and working fine. But on this particular day, nobody wrote down the flow total from the flowmeter, and the municipality didn’t get their report on time. And suddenly, what was a daily inconvenience has become a crisis.

Troubleshooting FTP failures on Honeywell paperless process recorders

One of the great things about Honeywell Trendview X-Series paperless recorders is that they communication via Ethernet. It’s great, because you can get data from your recorder anywhere on your plant network. But, since they’re network devices, you now have to understand how to troubleshoot network failures, and not just fix “regular” recorder issues.

Trendview recorders frequently connect to a local area network (LAN), so the recorded data can be easily transferred to the historian database portion of the recorder’s Trendserver Pro software (TSP).  TrendServer pro uses a standard Internet file transfer protocol (FTP) to grab data from the recorder. And in a lot of cases, a software scheduler is used to grab data on a periodic basis.

So, you’re cranking along, and the recorder’s talking perfectly to the server, and then one day you see one of the dreaded FTP failure messages.
